Students in Iowa who are attending an alternative school in fear of them failing their junior and senior year are being given the opportunity to replace their PE credits by assisting the elderly and disabled with their yard work. Not only does this benefit the students’ curricular needs, but it also benefits the people of the community. Those that cannot do the strenuous yard work themselves have the help of young, able-bodied teens which helps out both parties physically. Along with getting a good workout in, the kids are able to learn about what it’s like to work towards something in order to help someone else. Both emotional and physical benefits given to these kids are extremely important and can be beneficial for them in the future. Hopefully, this yard work system is put into place across the country with it teaching kids about the fundamentals of hard work and helping others.
