On Monday, October 12th, 2020, we are celebrating Indigenous People’s Day. We should not be celebrating Christopher Columbus.
Christopher Columbus is often credited for discovering the United States, but how can we ignore the people who inhabited the lands years before this colonizer even stepped foot into this land.
Christopher Columbus should be recognized, but he should not be celebrated. We need to stop celebrating these racist white men who took this land by force.
In return we should utilize and bring awareness to the injustices and mistreatment of indigineuos people. We should talk about the epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women. There also seems to be a huge issue with police men dismissing the disappearances of these women.
Let’s bring awareness to the amount of indigenous people still struggling in this country, there is no need to celebrate a man for committing these heinous acts.
