Last Tuesday, October 20th, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made her Twitch streaming debut. The young congresswoman from the Bronx decided to join the platform as a way of encouraging young people to register to vote. The event was a success! It garnered, at most, 439,000 viewers live and became the fifth most watched stream on the site. Ocasio-Cortez, alongside fellow congresswoman Ilhan Omar and full-time Twitch streamers, played the trending murder mystery game, Among Us (2018). The game in particular was a good choice to play for a first livestream due to its rapidly increasing audience and growing popularity. It also consists of a concept of voting as well. Some big names appeared on the stream such as Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Sean “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Ben “DrLupo” Lupon, and many more. The demographic of those regularly watching streams on Twitch are 18-34 year-olds, making it the perfect platform to use to encourage young Americans to cast their ballots. Hopefully even after the upcoming election we continue to see politicians, celebrities, artists, etc. influence the younger generation to make good choices.
