How to Pick a Topic

With all the tasks and challenges I’ve come across during my time in school picking a topic – either for an essay, presentation, or article – always seems to be the hardest task of them all. On one hand, you want to do something unique that hasn’t been done hundreds of times, but on the other hand, you don’t want to do something completely random that does not make sense.

The most effective way I have found to choose a topic seems obvious, but when more thought is put into this method it creates amazing ideas. The first step is simple, look up broad ideas (ex. Food, sports, or politics) on your desired search engine. Then, out of those broad topics pick a subtopic that interests you. It is important that you have some type of interest in the topic chosen so more effort will be put into the research and execution. From there see what options the internet provides, but these are not the topics you will write about. From the list of options, brainstorm things that are related to what is given. When this is done you create your unique idea to base your assignment on that other students most likely won’t have since they can not simply find it by doing a quick search.
