Poland Fighting Big Tech

Recently, Poland is taking notice of what is happening with censorship in the United States and wants to stop it from happening in their country. Deputy Polish Justice Minister Sebastian Kaleta stated, “We see that when Big Tech decides to remove content for political purposes, it’s mostly content which praises traditional values or praises conservatism, and it is deleted under their ‘hate speech policy’ when it has no legal right to do so”. For forty-five years after the second world war when Poland was just a communist puppet state under the control of the Soviet Union, the Polish citizens were suffering and had very few rights which didn’t include freedom of speech. When the Soviet Union finally collapsed in 1991 and they were able to make their own choices and their own constitution, they added freedom of speech which is article 45 of the Polish constitution. Many Poles who are alive today had to live under the control of the USSR and understand the importance of having basic rights including freedom of speech. Sebastian Kaleta added that the removal of former U.S. President Donald Trump from social media platforms was just another example of Big Tech overreach and set a dangerous precedent. Due to this, under the new legislation, any platform that bans a user would face fines of $13.5 million dollars unless the content posted is also illegal by Polish laws.
