One Year In a Pandemic

The thought of having a chance to go back this year is exciting whether you physically can’t go back but rejoice in the news that things are getting better, or for those that are going back and what changes the school has made since March 13th of last year. I can remember everything that happened on March 13th of 2020, just like most of you. First off, there were some weird moments of the day, like most of the seniors at the time, were gone as they planned their senior ditch day on that Friday. Or me being excused from the track in the middle of practice due to COVID precautions. This brings me to the most memorable moment of that day, I had anatomy wherein in the class we discussed the difference between a healthcare professional’s duty and their obligation when it came to helping the COVID, infected patients. This discussion had to be one of the best discussions since COVID was all new to us, our opinions were not clouded, rather we had an honest discussion about how we felt. At the end of it, I can say most of us ended up somewhere in the middle. The discussion happened at the beginning of the pandemic,  and there was not too much information on the topic. On the side of obligation, we concluded that it is ultimately up to the health care professionals’ hearts if they want to help because the general population is not educated on how to handle infectious diseases. And on the duty side, we concluded that no healthcare professional is required to help; they can always decide to step down or take time off to see how COVID is changing. In that two-hour discussion, my mind had started to think and it had to be one of the best class periods in my high school career.
