Students Are Thrilled With VUSD’s New Dress Code

As schools open back up there are certain things changing for everyone individually, but one thing just happened that affects all kids that attend a school in VUSD. The district has changed their view on dress code and realized that the traditional dress code that was in place seemed to target young girls regarding the lengths of their shorts or the thickness of the straps on their tops. A lot of the language used in the old dress code also targeted people with textured hair who use protective styles. They banned “braids, locks, and twists.” The traditional dress code was in place to keep students from getting “distracted,” but it’s more distracting to have to pull a kid out of class because now they’re sitting in the office waiting to get a change of clothes instead of learning (like they came to school to do). And that’s not all. The other students in the class had to see them get removed and are now more distracted than they ever would be over some piece of clothing. Luckily, there is a new dress code in place that is a lot more lenient. The new dress code eliminates the need for clothes to be a certain length or to cover a certain amount of a student’s shoulder. The district agrees that as long as everything that needs to be covered is covered, there should be no issue with what a student chooses to wear. This change is beneficial to the students who attend a school in VUSD and it shows that Visalia is taking a step in the right direction for inclusivity.
