VUSD Caves to Allowing Fans at Sporting Events

On Friday, August 27th, 2021, all students and spectators were given official approval to attend any home sporting event of VUSD high school sports teams. Since COVID, spectators were not allowed to attend games, including outdoor sports. Recently, however, they began allowing direct family members of players to attend, which was a huge step in the right direction for sports, as teams were finally allowed some freedom.

Because it has been almost two years since students have been able to go to a football game, both students and parents were very eager to support. Once the new information that all spectators were allowed to attend was announced, everyone was ecstatic because there was a sense that things were close to getting back to normal. Many posts on social media went up, students were making plans with their friends to attend, and ASB got to work preparing for the next day’s game.

The following day, the majority of the student population came to school in green attire, including accessories like “Miner Nation” t-shirts, green tights, and green headbands in support of the game. ASB worked hard on Friday morning to get all of the decorations together for the stadium and also made many signs for students in the student section to use. After school, ASB went to the stadium to set up streamers, balloons, signs, and much more decorations that they always put up at games before COVID. Things were starting to feel the same again.

At the game, the student section on the home side was packed and the stands were full of spectators there to support the team. Everyone there was happy to be out supporting the boys once again. At the beginning of the game, students ran out with flags, spelling out “EDHS”, leading the varsity football team onto the field. The students were hyped and everyone there was there with the intention of cheering on our team and to watch a good game. The concession stand was open to everyone and ASB was passing out balloons and green necklaces to the crowd. The spirit among the spectators was through the roof. The boys won 48-42 against Tulare Union. It was the best way to start off the football season and the school year that students could ask for.
