On Friday, February 4th, El Diamante High School played Mt. Whitney High School for soccer. Girls soccer played at home and the boys played away at Mt. Whitney. El Diamante’s student leadership class planned and executed a tailgate that included music, corn hole, spike ball, and served hot cocoa and cinnamon rolls for $2. The tailgate took place on the track in front of the snack bar. The El Diamante High School girls varsity soccer team beat Mt. Whitney 2-1 for the second time this year. The starting lineup for the Miners included goalie Mya Rodriguez, defenders Lynea Rivera, Sami Cloutier, Allie Flores, and Addison Tripp, midfielders Clara Krebsbach, Morgan Phillipe, and Taylor Vandergriff, and forwards Jackie Saechao, Nikki Licon, and Hailey Martinez. The first goal for the Miners was scored by senior Nikki Licon in the first five minutes of the game, through the keeper’s legs. Licon’s goal was assisted by freshman Jackie Saechao. The second goal for the Miners was scored in the second half by sophomore Morgan Phillipe after a breakaway where she went 1 v. 1 against the Pioneers’ goalkeeper. With only two games left in the league, the Miners girls soccer team now has six wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie, putting them in 2nd place in the league, right behind Redwood High School. The girls’ next game is on Tuesday, February 8th, against Redwood, which is also Senior night for El Diamante. Come out and support your fellow Miners this week at their games!
