What Does School Really Do?

The most common answer would be “To prepare you for the real world, of course!” Unfortunately, I don’t see this to be an accurate answer in the slightest.

In the real world, there are multiple answers to every question. Differing opinions. Free thinking. Collaboration.

When we are in school, we are taught that there is one right answer. We are told by most teachers to shut up and listen.

In the real world, we almost always have access to resources such as the internet.

When we are in school, we are told to memorize everything for one test. To stay silent and not ask for help.

School isn’t built to prepare us for the real world, it’s built to control us. Children begin school excited to learn just to be told that they’re doing it wrong.
