Mya Rodriguez is a senior at El Diamante and would definitely fit into the category of a “Major Miner”. Rodriguez is quite an impressive athlete, as she played water polo and is a soccer goalkeeper for El Diamante High School. Rodriguez played three years of varsity water polo and had an impressive last season. As a senior, she was the captain of the girl’s varsity water polo team, scored 71 goals, and had the second-most goals that season for girl’s water polo in the West Yosemite League. Rodriguez was named Offensive Player of the Year for El Diamante’s polo team and led her team to the Division II Valley championships. She was also recognized by the girl’s water polo coaches of WYL for her outstanding water polo skills and was placed on the first team of WYL in 2021.
As the astonishing athlete, as she is, Rodriguez transitioned from the pool to the soccer field with ease. In the 2021-2022 girls soccer season, Rodriguez had a total of 88 saves and 2 goals. As the goalkeeper, she was the last line of defense on the field and her teammates had total trust in her abilities to save the ball from going in the net. She was awarded Most Valuable Player of the year for the El Diamante girls soccer team and also was voted WYL Defensive Player of the Year, out of every girl’s varsity soccer player in WYL, which we are beyond proud of her for. Rodriguez’s presence will definitely be missed next year by the girl’s soccer team, as she was a confident, hard-working player, who naturally led those around her. She committed to William Jessup University, where she will be furthering her soccer career, on September 9th, 2021. Because of her dedication and drive, Rodriguez is sure to go far.
