Florida’s Don’t Say Gay Bill

Tuesday, March 8th, 2022, the Florida Senate passed their “Don’t Say Gay” bill in which kindergarten through 3rd-grade teachers will not be permitted to teach their students about sexual orientation or gender identity. All the discussions in the classroom had to be “age and developmentally appropriate”.

Although the law was passed, protesters of the law suggest the danger that could become present in regards to the students’ mental health. If they have a student who happens to feel a certain way about their orientation or identity though could feel different or singled out. School life is hard enough on LGBTQ youth without the addition of banning educating students on the topic.

Since there is nothing in the current curriculum in regards to LGBTQ, the law won’t make any alterations to the lessons they’ve been learning in the past. The mandate is only in place to prevent future addition to the curriculum.
