The Sunshine Protection Act

The Senate recently approved a bipartisan bill, the Sunshine Protection Act, that will make daylight saving time permanent. The Sunshine Protection Act still needs to be signed by President Joe Biden and passed by the House, and will not be put into place until November 2023 if approved. Many believe that this act will have many positive effects on different aspects of our life. One of this bipartisan bill’s main backers, Sen. Marco Rubio, expects that we would see reduced crime, child obesity, and seasonal depression. While daylight saving time would come with a lot of positive effects, it would also have its negatives. Health and Sleep experts say that adopting year-round daylight saving time would have negative effects on a person’s health, like heart diseases and poor night sleep. Others don’t like the idea of sending their kids off to school while it is still dark out, for example when waiting for the bus or walking.
