Otters and Object Permanence

By: TAYLOR BENNETT

I’m the last sea otter at the zoo

I have the tank to myself and my own trainer too

I get extra clams and I have quite the view

But this new life ain’t nothing without you

Do you promise when you see me again

You’ll fall asleep right beside me and gently hold my hand?

We’ll drift past the polar bears and penguins on land

We’ll make it somewhere someday, just as we planned

Today I saw a new sign, outside the zoo

But I can’t read

The trainers stopped giving me urchins for supper

And now the polar bears are freed

I’m the last sea otter at the zoo

I have a tank to myself but I can’t see through

And I’m sure these words are well overdue

But I assure you, I love you
