On Thursday, the Senate confirmed (53-47) Ketanji Brown Jackson as the newest Supreme Court Justice. Appointed by Joe Biden, Jackson will be serving as the first African American woman on the court. The 51-year-old judge is joining with 9 years of experience on the federal bench.
Biden tweeted soon after the appointment, “we’ve taken another step towards making our highest court reflect the diversity of America.” She is receiving overall support from the rest of the court, most having positive, welcoming statements. Out of the 53 supportive votes, most were Democrats, and the other few were Independents and Republicans. All of the 47 dissenting votes were Republicans.
She will be welcomed as the 3rd African American to serve on the court, after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas. She will also be the 6th woman to serve on the court, three of which are currently serving.
