With the new success of FromSoftware’s new title “Elden Ring,” many people are taking another look at the company’s other major titles like the incredibly infamous and equally adored Dark Souls series. So for those of you who are interested in getting into the Dark Souls series, I would highly recommend starting with Dark Souls 3, the reason being that this is the most modern Dark Souls title, and since they don’t have any sort of canonical order in which you need to play them to understand the story it doesn’t really matter what order to play them in. This game was basically the blueprint for Elden Ring, so players coming from there back to Dark Souls will find that the mechanics are extremely similar if not literally the exact same in most aspects. However, unlike Elden Ring Dark Souls 3 is not a free roam dungeon crawler type game and instead follows an extremely linear progression system and focuses more on worldbuilding through a smaller map but more intricate and fun to explore areas. The stat system is also very similar but only just slightly different, with slightly more limited builds that you can run but still very fun and engaging mechanics with the different weapons and types of magic that you can use. The bosses are also very very fun, and there are many fun secret bosses and areas you can explore if you look around enough for them so there is a little bit of differentiation from the linear pathway and progression system in the game. So if you’re looking for a great game to play after finishing Elden Ring and want to play a classic FromSoftware game, then I would highly recommend you take a look at Dark Souls 3.
