Mental Lords Review: Is It Worth The Watch?

The heavy metal-themed, coming-of-age teen comedy-drama “Mental Lords” (2022) got metalheads loving this film. Written by D.B Weiss (Co-creator of HBO max “Game of Thrones”), directed by Peter Sollet (“Nick and Norah’s infinite playlist”). Metal Lords is about two teenage misfits Hunter(Teddy van ee) and Kevin(Jaeden Martell) devoting their lives to metal and on the path of being worshipped like gods. Tensions rose when Kevin meet Emily, a skilled cello player that create a strong bond with Kevin.

It’s your typically two best buddies’ friendship being shattered apart by a girl; this film is very predictable based on the plot. Throughout, Hunter’s character dominates the first half of the movie with his loud personality and tone. He drives the narrative forward and creates conflicts. The other two protagonists, Kevin and Emily serve a good purpose in the story. Sadly their relationship is overshadowed by a scene in the first thirty-eight minutes. The jokes in Metal Lords are there for a cheap laugh but help established this film. Also, fifteen-year-old teens say swear words in every line of dialog is fitting.

In conclusion, Metal Lords is a fun movie to watch with friends and family. Probably not the best movie but it serves its purpose as a promising coming-of-age teen comedy-drama. In my personal opinion, Metal Lords is recommended and worth the watch.
