The Art of The Columnist

Staff Writer

When trying to figure out where you stand within the journalistic career path, it can often be extremely difficult to figure out what you want to do. There are over a dozen promising career paths within the life of an established writer. One might want to attend college and get a degree in English, Communications, or the Journalistic Arts. The main problem writers face after college is where they actually want to go. There are so many job titles to encounter. You have your field journalists, your news copy editors, and even freelance writers. These are all very great, but they don’t quite satisfy your average writer’s taste. To understand the beauty of writing as a career path, we must travel back to the days when the newspapers were the only form of documented fact the public may reach. We must travel back to the days when being a columnist actually meant something. Becoming a writer back in the early 1900s usually meant that you would go on to be a columnist for a local newspaper. It was quite an easy career path to follow, but it was extremely vital to the people. Columnists simply cover a certain column of a newspaper in which they write about politics, fashion, sports, films, and huge stories across the world. During these earlier times, the newspaper was the only way for people to receive important day-to-day information. With this being said, columnists played a huge role in our early society. If it weren’t for these important writers that ruled the columns, the people would have never been informed of the big stories happening within the world. Reasons like this draw me closer and closer to this career path. I believe being a columnist was important then and is even more important now. Although we now have multiple forms of informative communication, bigger things are happening within this world than ever before. The people need to be informed now more than ever, and that simple task all started with the columnist. I would absolutely love to be a columnist someday because my writing would have the ability to inform the world and provide a voice for the people.
