In the last three decades, there has been a sudden increase in crime. In 2021 alone, “California’s violent crime rate increased by 6.0%, from 440 per 100,000 residents in 2020 to 466 in 2021” the PPIC (Public Policy Institute of California) claimed. That an extensive amount of crimes are being committed. The question is why are there so many crimes being committed in a short span of time? According to some, the Reasons for committing a crime include greed, anger, jealousy, revenge, or pride. But are those all the causes for someone to commit crimes?

There are also social and economic issues in today’s society. People have their differences and political opinions. People of color and the LGBTQIA+ community are still being discriminated against to this day; this resulted in a large number of crimes. As reported by researchers, 70% percents of crimes involved a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. That’s over half of the crime rate in the United States; the same goes for people of color.

In short explanation, psychology is another factor why there’s a large amount of crime in the United State alone. Checkley’s ideas on sociopathy were adopted in the 1980s to describe a “cycle of violence” or pattern found in family histories. This “cycle of Violence” is where people who grow up with abuse or antisocial behavior in the home will be much more likely to mistreat their own children, who in turn will often follow the same pattern. The same differences and opinions can also affect the child also.
