Between the Lines – A Book Review

By JOSSLYN CASKEY

This week I reread Matched by Ally Condie, the first novel in the Matched trilogy. This novel is a dystopian young adult novel about a controlled society in which people are “matched” with their life partners at the age of 17. But when Cassia is matched with not just one person but two, she now has to make a decision.

I originally read this book in middle school and I never finished it. I just couldn’t get into the story. So this week I tried rereading Matched curious to see if I’d enjoy it more. I was mistaken. I couldn’t finish the book yet again. Normally I can power through “bad” books but not for this one. For me, it was the unrealistic and fake feeling of (forgotten characters name)  and Cassia. I talk a lot about chemistry in books I think it’s one of the most crucial parts of reading and writing. But for this, I just didn’t feel anything there was nothing special about any of the characters. Not only that the dialogue was just as unfulfilling, the dialogue felt dry and fake. Some of the phrases they used just sounded funny and overall didn’t fit the perfectionism of the story. So it is for these reasons I give Matched 1.5/5 stars.
