Designing a Home Step by Step

This may be weird to think about as a high schooler but in my opinion, it’s a good thing to start thinking about your future home to be able to save money. Designing a home may seem hard but it also has many good advantages. Some of these advantages would be your ability to control the design. If you want to have control over your whole home you can when you design it yourself, if you want to change it you can as well you don’t need to contact anyone else. Another advantage is saving money and learning through the process. If you’re still not sure about designing your own home here are some questions you can ask yourself:

  1. Do I have an interest in learning the technical details?
  2. Do I already have a basic knowledge of construction/ engineering design?
  3. Do I plan to design a fully custom home, and if so, can I afford an architect?
  4. Do I have the time to invest in learning all of the construction details & software?
  5. Is there a plan online that will fit my needs? (maybe with requiring a few small changes)
  6. Do I plan to use the skills I learn in the future?

Here are some step-by-step that you can take:

  1. Identify goals and needs
  2. Research
  3. Brainstorming ideas
  4. Schematic design
  5. Design development
  6. Compose construction drawings
  7. Construction begins
