Hold Your Horse Is Album Review

On March 19th, 2002, Noise and Math rock band Hella released their first album titled “Hold Your Horse Is” and this project that Hella made is a very unique listening experience and is one of the more well-known albums that define the sub-genre known as “Math Rock” which is obviously rock music but complex and disorganized with weird complex polyrhythms and such. Hella only consists of two members which are guitarist Spencer Seim and then drummer Zach Hill. Zach Hill is one of the best drummers of our generation and even of all time, he is also known for his work with other bands and his own solo music but the most popular project he has been in is being the drummer of an experimental hip-hop trio “Death Grips”

Hold Your Horse Is was a very complex album to listen to, there are no lyrics whatsoever it’s just Spencer and Zach playing the most diverse complex melodies you will ever hear, especially on the second track “Biblical Violence” which makes you wonder what you are even listening to at that point because it is so out of proportion. The math rock elements are definitely there in the tracks of this album and if you watch Hella live, you can see how crazy this duo is.

Hold Your Horse Is was an amazing listen and is a great album that defines the Math Rock sub-genre even after 20 years of it being released, it was way ahead of its time. Overall I think this album is a 9/10.
