Miners Defeat Tulare Union in Girls Tennis

By: Madeline Alvarez

Last Monday Aug. 28 the El Diamante varsity tennis team had an away match against Tulare Union. El Diamante won the match handedly, 9-0.

During their match against Tulare Union, the El D Miners played both singles and doubles matches. When playing tennis a player or team wants to win enough points to win games, enough games to win sets, and enough sets to win the match. El Diamante had no problem executing these rules and winning their games. They were able to beat Tulare Union from the onset.

Player (number 6) and senior, Ellie Beck says, “Our team did well against Tulare Union and I’m excited to see what the season holds.”

The varsity team consists of eight players. They played six singles matches and three doubles matches. The singles matches consisted of two sets with six games each and doubles matches was one set of eight games.Tennis is a sport that is simple yet complex. It can be played with two players, called a singles match, or with four players, which is called a doubles match.

Between all of the sets El Diamante destroyed Tulare Union, keeping them from winning any sets. Number 2 player, Mia Leal and number 3 player, Breana Garcia performed well on Monday, winning their set 8-1. This was helpful for the whole team to eventually beat Tulare Union by 9 points. The match lasted longer than usual due to advantage scoring, but El Diamante was able to bring home the victory.

There are more matches for the El Diamante tennis team weekly. There is also an upcoming weekend tournament in Clovis Sept. 9.
