Miner Football Captains Reveal: “It’s All About the Love of the Game”

By Nevaeh Creason

A lot goes into playing on the El Diamante football team, but no one truly knows the behind the scenes and understands the impact that the captains have on the team. They know the psychology of their team; they know what makes or breaks their team.

Football has always been an essential part of the high school experience that allows students to get involved and support our school. Friday Night Lights have always been something high school students and the local community look forward to. However, no one ever thinks about what goes through their minds before a Friday night game.

El Diamante’s Varsity Football captains: Marskel Akins, Jayden Lopez, Johnathan Aguirre, and Kaleb Konersman, were willing to give us some insight into being on the football team as a captain.

Something that keeps our safety, Jayden Lopez, motivated is his mom, “Every time I look into the stands [I love seeing] my mom and seeing her smile on her face.”

While Lopez looks to family for inspiration, others look to other players, saying family isn’t always about blood.

Our Defensive End, Johnathan Aguirre says, “Football builds family and I like that part about football.” Football is more than just a sport and many may not see it like that. These players pour their hearts out on the field as you can see and [they] love playing and experiencing the excitement and adrenaline that football brings.
