Varied Takes on Horror Movie, “Talk to Me”

By Kai Rebelo

A new horror movie hitting cinemas has been all over social media with extremely mixed reviews and opinions. Talk to Me, directed by Danny and Micheal Philippou, is one of the newest horror movies by A24 films that was released in late July of this year. A24 films always seem to have mixed reviews in such movies as: Midsommar, X, The Whale, Beau is Afraid. People have been giving conflicting reviews about Talk to Me; some saying that it’s the best horror movie of the year and some saying it’s the worst.

Talk to Me is about a group of teens and young adults from Australia finding themselves conjuring spirits with an embalmed hand of a supposed physic medium until it ends up going wrong as in all horror movies. After I watched it I couldn’t sleep that night but I absolutely loved the plot, twists, characters, and the graphics. And I think my favorite scene was towards the middle, right before everything goes wrong, when it’s cycling through characters in a montage with the song “Le Monde” playing.

However, I do believe that there could have been more detail and more story line for other characters as most of it was only catered around Mia and Riley and their experience. I think that adding in some backstory to more of the characters or just adding more screen time for them would have benefited the movie a ton.

A few students on campus have also seen Talk to Me and gave us their opinions on the movie and a few critiques:

“I’d give it a solid 4.5 out of 5. It was extremely good and I loved the attention to detail. But I wish more of the characters were involved in the plot and some of the scenes were kind [of] unnecessary and had no meaning or importance to the plot.” stated junior Ashton Salgado, who saw the movie on September 20th.

However, some people have agreed more with Esmeralda Mejia, another junior who watched the movie in theaters on the day it came out She said that, “Honestly, it was a pretty good movie but extremely short and I expected it to be more scary but it was just gross and gory. The makeup, costume, and graphics were amazing, I’ll give it that. But I think that they should have added way more plot and meat into the actual storyline itself.”
