Miners in Action: New Club Helps Students in Need

By Skye Mendivil

Today, over 11 million children are currently living in poverty in America and over half a million of those children are currently homeless. Students who have economic disadvantages are more likely to drop out, be given disciplinary action, and have chronic absence rates. Many of these students don’t have access to basic necessities, food, or water.

Miners in Action is a club is a new club created to provide a safe place, to use your passions creatively and helpfully, most importantly to change students’ lives. Meetings are held every other Monday and in Mr. Romero’s classroom in room 915. The events that we hold also count for community service hours.

Olivia Montemayor, the president of our club, says “ Helping hands are needed to accept and unload donations, sort donations, hang up clothing, and much more. Whatever your skills, or passions, we’re happy to help you put them to good use to help others.”

Mr. Romero–M.I.A. Advisor

Mr. Romero, Miners in Action’s advisor and club creator, adds, “Our goal is to have a clothing closet, basic hygiene closet, and a food bank for any student that needs it.”

Be a part of Miners in Action and participate in events, discussions, and fundraisers that benefit you and our club. Also, show up to our next event, Miners in Action’s Car Wash. Please refer to any Miners in Action club members or Mr. Romero in room 905 for pre-sale tickets and more information about our club. Presale tickets are $7 while on-site tickets are 10$. Come on out to the El Diamante parking lot on November 18th if you want to support our club and clean a car.
