On February 6th, El Diamante’s BSU (Black Student Union) traveled to Fresno for a Leadership Conference for Black youth. This is where they learned more about black history, and were also given great opportunities such as job offers, scholarships, and awards for their excellence. There were speakers such as Dr. Michele Cantwell-Copher, Dorothy “Dottie” Smith, Desi Woods-Jones, and many more

During this event students were given the opportunity to participate in break out rooms. One break out room I had attended was called “Sista to Sista” and it was to help our female students learn more about coming together and communicating about problems and struggles. This break-out session was to meet and discuss the struggles that women, especially women of color, go through.

At the end of the event they decided to give awards to two students from each school. The Miners from El Diamante High School who won these awards are Seniors Yarel Hunt and Keshae Lashore. We hope that the future Miners will be more involved in BSU and future events that will take place.
